There are two types of currency: Paper notes and coins.
Notes: one taka, two taka, five taka, ten taka, twenty taka, fifty taka, one hundred taka and five hundred taka. Notes from five taka to five hundred taka are issued by Bangladesh Bank.
Coins: one poisha, five poisha, ten poisha, twenty-five poisha, fifty poisha, one taka and five taka. One taka and two taka notes and all the coins are issued by Bangladesh Government.
Currency exchange: All foreign currency exchanged must be entered on a currency declaration form. Hotel bills must be paid in a major convertible currency or with travellers cheques.
Credit cards: Limited acceptance of Visa, MasterCard and American Express outside the country's capital
though there are a large number of Standard Chartered Bank ATMs in Dhaka, Chittagong, Bogra, Sylhet, Narayanganj and Khulna. There are also HSBC ATMs in Dhaka and Chittagong. Check with your credit card company for details of merchant acceptability and other services which may be available to you.
Travellers cheques: Can be exchanged on arrival at Dhaka Airport. To avoid additional exchange rate charges, travellers are advised to take travellers cheques in US Dollars or Pounds Sterling.
If you are planning to shop in some of the smaller towns and villages, it would be advisable that you pay with cash.
